Flatpicking Collection - 1997 Annual Edition MB97342BCD $19.95

Flatpicking Guitar Magazine, in conjunction with Mel Bay Publications, is proud to present this sampler of 20 flatpicking guitar solos by some of the best bluegrass guitar players in the business. This project was sparked by requests from readers from audio reference to material featured in the magazine. The concepts grew to book-length proportions with the inclusion of transcriptions in standard notation and tablature as well as biographical information about the artists. Intermediate in difficulty. The companion CD features the artist's recordings of each piece in the book taken from their original albums.

Doc & Dawg MB97167BCD $29.95

Arthel "Doc" Watson and David "Dawg" Grisman's musical friendship goes back to the early 1960s. The CD Doc & Dawg from the Acoustic Disc label captures some of their private sessions created during Doc's visits to David's home studio over the years. The transcriptions found in this book give Doc's guitar parts in notation and tablature with chord symbols. All fourteen selections from the CD are included, encompassing a variety of musical styles that exhibits all the warmth, joy and artistry of Doc's playing. Selections include an easy-going Bill Monroe blues, "Bluegrass Stomp," a racing "Soldier's Joy," a bright, jazzy "Sweet Georgia Brown," the folk favorite "Frankie and Johnny," and more.

Shady Grove MB97073 $14.95

Jerry Garcia, the lead guitarist, singer, and alleged leader of the Grateful Dead, became an icon of the 60s youth movement. It was well-known that Jerry was a huge fan, and probably considered himself a player, of old-time American music, from mountain fiddle and banjo music, to English ballads, to jug band music to bluegrass and blues, and more. On the "Shady Grove" recordings one can hear the deep commitment, respect, and love Jerry had for this traditional American music. He's very faithful to the original artists' music. That may be surprising if you expect more of an ego-driven "my version" approach from one the biggest rock stars ever. What you have here is a vibrant collection of wonderful traditional American songs, from a great variety of genres, played in a style closely based on their traditional sources.

The Legacy of Doc Watson MB95742 $25.00

The first authorized compilation of Doc Watson's life and music is meant to serve not only as a biography, but also as a unique instructional book. A running dialogue with Doc reveals the story behind each tune, while Steve Kaufman provides additional performance tips. Here's your opportunity to learn from the best! The obvious rapport between the author and his subject produced a formula that fittingly captures the 50-year legacy of a remarkable musician. Written in notation and tablature for the intermediate level flatpicking guitarist with a few nods to fingerstyle technique. Includes an insightful illustrated essay by Dan Miller of Flatpicking Guitar Magazine.
