Norman & Nancy Blake, My Dear Old Southern
Home SHAN208DVD $24.98
|
|
 |
This DVD is a simple two camera setup. The backdrop
is a soundstage decorated to look like a living room: floor lamps, furniture,
carpets, comfy chairs; Norman and Nancy sit facing each other. Each
has a guitar on their lap. They talk in the direction of each other,
shy, not media stars at all. Norman describes the guitars -- old Martins
-- the specifics of each one carefully delineated. The unique fret design,
a little history about this one's "lost weekend." Then they
play. Mountain music, reels, jigs. They are extraordinary.

Bill Monroe The Father of Bluegrass Music WHE73040DVD
$24.98 |
|
 |
Both casual fans and bluegrass fanatics will revel
in the completeness of Gebhardt's vision, which expertly weaves the
often poignant Monroe interviews (including sweetly moving duets with
Hartford and Skaggs) with additional interviews and archival film, television,
and still photographs. Past and present members of Monroe's Bluegrass
(née Blue Grass) Boys testify to Monroe's sure command of his
lifelong franchise, as do an impressive choir of believers including
Emmylou Harris, Jerry Garcia, Marty Stuart, and former Bluegrass Boys
Del McCoury and Peter Rowan.

Doc Watson Rare Performances 1982-93 VEST13024 24.98 |
|
 |
By the time of this video's opening performance, Doc
Watson had already been performing for urban audiences for more than 20
years. Doc's accompanists as well as his songs presented here are an eclectic
group ranging from his 1950s musical partner, pianist Jack Williams, to
his son Merle (seen playing exquisite slide guitar), to Ricky Skaggs (singing
and playing mandolin in a Monroe Brothers style set) to a stellar stringband
featuring Mark O'Connor, Tony Rice, Bela Fleck, David Grisman and Jerry
Douglas. This collection ends with a solo set from Doc which brings his
music full circle. |
